As the saying goes "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance". This has been undoubtedly adopted by the University of Port Harcourt.
In recent time, the school has witnessed incessant increase in its fees ranging
from Tuition, Hostel, Acceptance, and etc. The school management has increased
the school fees of their new intake from about #30,000 to #80,000 over the past
four years. This #80,000 excludes hostel accommodation fee which currently is #20350
and acceptance fee which is #30,000.
What baffles me most is that this increase in fees does not
amount to any change in the methods of learning. There are still insufficient lecture
halls, most of lecture halls are without white boards or (black boards in the
least), the labs are still in deplorable states with little or no equipments in
them. Yet, the students are made to pay heavily for things they don’t make use
of.
It is assumed that the Government does not care about the
predicaments of the Nigerian Students. The poor students too, do not have any
strong union to give them a voice anymore. This is evil and it is against the
will of God.
The University Of Port Harcourt runs a number of accredited programs
ranging from Basic, Certificate, SSLT, Part time, Regular, Sand wich, and Post
Graduate to mention but a few. Currently the school fees of students enrolled
for Pgde in Education is #155,800 in 2013 against #90,000 in 2012. Where is all
these money going to? And they still want the Government to take care of
everything for them.
This is happening while other nations are making education
free. What is the gain that our nation is blessed with oil and other mineral
resources?
There have been many unanswered questions in the mind of the Nigerian Students. These questions include….
Why are Students paying these High fees to gain Education?
Did our leaders and Vice Chancellors pay these high fees during their time?
What is the essence of having a school hostel?
Is hostel Accommodation not supposed to be the cheapest?
Why can’t we have free education in our Federal Universities?
It is in record that most of our leader acquired their higher education almost free.

The Government should investigate the following:
1. The issue of reckless increase in school fees in our schools
2. High cost of hostel accommodations in our schools.
3. Acceptance fee issues.
Also, the Student Union Government in Uniport, if there is any should be aware that the spirit of student unionism does not lie on how much money was made while in office but in the fight to reduce the hardship and struggle of the Nigerian students.

This is a plea to the University of Port Harcourt and the
Government in general. If nothing is done, it is the poor masses that will bear
the brunt.
LONG LIVE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA!
LONG LIVE THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT!!
LONG LIVE ALL NIGERIAN STUDENTS!!!
ALUTA CONTINUA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
